首先从书名就可以看书教学目的，“高级英语会话教科书”，也就是说，这本书是为了让你用英语与别人“会话”的。

课本中英结合，不过当时由于白话文教学还未普及，所以这本英语教材中的中文还是咬文嚼字的文言文。

民国时期对英语的重视，远远超出我们的想象。从幼儿启蒙阶段就非常重视英语教学。上海广益书局出版的幼儿启蒙读物《幼学琼林》，就简述了有趣的汉语注音法（就是古德毛宁的那种）。

不仅如此，民国时期还有针对方言的翻译秘籍…1917年，华西医院创始人启尔德医生为华西协合大学的医科生编了一本川话英文对译教材，川话配英语翻译，堪称神书！川话10级和英语4级的完美结合！
除了日常学习，考试也是必不可少的。有一些学校，特别是名校，不仅有英语考试，还要用英语去论述严肃的时代大命题。而且，像历史、地理、物理、数学这样的科目，也都要用英语答题。如果英语不好，可能题目都看不懂。

考试是教育的指挥棒。
三四十年代的中国，内忧外患，大学入学考试更于时事联系密切，英语卷频繁传递出对国家的关切、对学生的期许。
比如918事件后，蒋介石提出了“攘外必先安内”的政策，继续围剿红军。在这样的形势下，1933年南开大学的英文作文题目是，The Evils of Civil War，内战之恶。
同年，北洋工学院则发问，The Greatest Need in China at Present，此刻中国最紧要之事。想必，学生的答卷里，除了抗日与剿共之辩，还会有中西之争，强国改制之法……,都是为国家建言献策，而且你还得用英文来写。
